This Brigg town centre picture - taken outside Scalini's chippie about 11am today - shows extensive salting of the pedestrian area during this chilly weather.

Brigg and Wolds' Coun Nigel Sherwood - Cabinet Member for Highways and Neighbourhoods at North Lincolnshire Council - has been prominent in a pro-active scheme to stockpile, distribute and spread extra salt across the district.

Patches of Wrawby Street had so much sand this morning it reminded us of Cleethorpes seafront. And that's not meant as a criticism.

I bought a bag of rock-salt from a local supermarket recently.
I spread it about my steps in anticipation of the icy weather - I certainly don't want Sue the Postie falling over,
Went out this morn; the steps were clear of ice....but then I promptly skidded and sat on my bum after slipping on the rock salt itself.
The rock salt I bought is of a uniform granule size and it doesn't readily crunch into powder as one would normally expect - it's a bit like walking on funny-shaped ball-bearings.
There does appear to be a design fault somewhere...the salt may melt the ice, but because of it granular-like quality and crunch-resistance nature, it creates it own slipping hazard.
I shall tell Tecso of my discovery and my sore bum!
